Post-registration education in three fields of clinical practice
Article Abstract:
A survey of clinical practitioners in mental illness and mental handicap nursing and midwifery aimed to provide evidence on participation in formal and informal post-registration education. About 678 practitioners responded to a questionnaire of whom 126 wre enrolled in formal courses. About 518 had attended informal education events although 454 would have liked to attend more. Staff shortages and work loads were the most significant reasons for non-attendance. The average perceived need was about 1 study day per month. The findings complement the United Kingdom Central Council's 'Report of the Post-Registration Education and Practice Project.'

From EN(M) to RMN
Article Abstract:
A part-time conversion course has been devised to upgrade the qualifications of Enrolled Nurses (EN) in the field of mental health. Unlike traditional conversion courses the programme recognises existing skills. The satisfactory completion of six units within two years allows flexibility. Nurses may undertake the course within existing contracts as ENs. Individual responsibility for meeting course requirements has improved communication and organisational skills. Participants have reported greater self-confidence and assertiveness.

An adult approach
Article Abstract:
Project 2000 has stimulated the United Midland College of Nursing and Midwifery, England to introduce adult learning strategies. Self-directed learning allows students to identify education needs and contribute to the formulation of objectives. The new system involves combining directed study with four hour teaching periods. Students have reacted positively to the changes that were implemented to ensure existing students did not feel down-graded by Project 2000.
