Private worries
Article Abstract:
Patients may receive better treatment in National Health Service hospitals than private hospitals in emergency situations. Solicitor Tom Osborne maintains expertise and facilities may be deficient as private hospitals are largely unregulated. Hospitals may deny responsibilty if surgeons are not directly employed by the hospital. Nurses may be the first to notice when problems arise but may be reluctant to take action for fear of losing their jobs.

How much does it hurt?
Article Abstract:
An understanding of sociological and psychological influences may aid pain assessment. Nurses should interpret non-verbal signals as expressions of pain may not reflect the true amount of suffering. Nurses should be aware of the many possible reactions to pain. Personality may influence pain expression. Depression, anxiety and stress may effect pain tolerance. Social class and family influence cause different reactions to pain.

Taking on Alfie (the extent of nursing care)
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes her care of a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS). The patient's dependence on her and her feelings of loss when he subsequently died are recounted. Becoming involved was felt necessary by the nurse to help the patient feel normal, but becoming so involved with a patient is not recommended for all nurses.
