Potential for mischief?
Article Abstract:
The National Health Service (NHS) has remained almost untainted in the wave of recent political scandals involving the government, but there is still potential for trouble making. The privatisation of the South West Thames Regional Health Authority's estates department, and wasting of public funds by the Wessex and West Midlands regions are the only discrepancies so far. Ministers believe that their reforms have made public accountability difficult to ensure. Their decision for a new task force to examine 'corporate governance' illustrates that new power may be easily misused. Adequate controls are needed to prevent new scandals, which would ruin the reform process.

Don't pop the corks yet
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour government will introduce its White Paper on National Health Service reform in Dec 1997. The existing system, introduced by the previous Conservative government, has proved so unpopular that the proposed reforms will undoubtedly receive a general welcome. However, the health service may still face problems, the most fundamental being whether there will be sufficient funding to meet increasing demand. Also, health care providers could lose their new-found cost-consciousness, and the government may be able to force a faster pace of change than it has promised.

Labour's lost love?
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom Labour Party Shadow Health Secretary, David Blunkett is in a poor position to oppose the Government's health policy. Many of the new strategies will be established before the next general election. However, Blunkett lacks an alternative health policy sustainable for five years of opposition. His emphasis on primary care and preventive health policies have not aroused much interest. There are no exploitable Conservative divisions over health policy. No crises have attracted media attention.
