Power and authority: is there a difference?
Article Abstract:
The way in which power is exercised in working relationships between health professionals depends largely on the size of the workplace. In a small health centre, for example, those who hold power tend to exercise it directly, whereas in a large hospital, employees generally work in teams which are part of large units which also interact with each other. Power must come from both external sources, such as the influence of the person concerned, and from internal sources, such as knowledge.

Experience counts
Article Abstract:
APEL (assessing prior experiential learning) is a valuable self-assessment tool allowing past life experiences to contribute towards the development of adult learners. It encourages students to undertake a process of self-assessment and reflection and allows the learning institution to give a sharper focus to teaching. Nurses can benefit from the APEL process by using past experience to give them an insight into patient problems, such as bereavement.

The NT Open Learning programme was launched in 1991 and the credit accumulation and transfer scheme (CATS) was launched in 1993, allowing enrolled nurses to gain credit for their conversion programme. The practice based studies enables nurses to incorporate their studies into their work more easily. During the programme there has been a focus on profiling allowing nurses to consider their own values, attitudes and beliefs.
