Prader-Willi syndrome
Article Abstract:
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is an inherited disorder characterized by a range of features including mental retardation, behavioural difficulties, obesity and hypogonadism. Features noticeable in babies and young children include low birthweight, small feet and hands, and excessive scratching. The inheritance pattern is complex and the cause is unknown, but there may be links with paternal contacts with hydrocarbons. Care and treatment of patients with PWS may include behavioural management, psychotherapy and hormone treatment.

The march of cholera
Article Abstract:
The cholera organism was identified in 1854 by John Snow, proving the killer disease was passed through infectious water supplies. Up to 15 million people died of cholera in India from 1817 to 1860. Patients die from extreme diarrhoea which dehydrates the system and causes vomiting and eventual death, sometimes in a short space of time. It is important to re-hydrate a cholera sufferer as quickly as possible using isotonic solutions.

Beyond Bedlam
Article Abstract:
Bethlem Hospital, which is more familiarly known as 'Bedlam', was the only institution for those suffering metal illness in the UK, until the industrial revolution. The number of asylums grew rapidly after the Lunatics and Asylum Act of 1845, however, instead of treating patients, the institutions aimed to isolate patients. The development of mental health care during the 19th century is detailed.
