Prejudice pre-empted
Article Abstract:
Nurses should be wary of making stereotypical assessments as they are simplistic and often inaccurate. Errors of judgement may arise from attributing behaviour to personal rather than environmental factors and incomplete information. Initial incorrect judgements may be difficult to change and begin a chain of misguided actions. Nurses should therefore be aware of their own prejudices. They should be receptive to conflicting attitudes and avoid initiating action which may have important repercussions.

Objective analysis of a critical incident
Article Abstract:
A nurse caring for an frail elderly patient who was losing the will to live describes how she spent a lot of time talking to her and encouraging her to be more optimistic about her situation. The nurse suggests that it is important to evaluate all the aspects of the care they have provided to see if any part of it could be improved or was less useful than any other. The beneficial strategies can then be used in the future with other patients.

Public prejudice
Article Abstract:
Most people approve of community care for psychiatric patients in principle, but there are still doubts over the actual practice, according to the results of a survey of 100 people in Rhyl, UK. People need to be reassured about the impact of community care on their neighbourhood, as there is still considerable prejudice against the mentally ill, and community care will only be successful if all issues involved are thoroughly investigated.
