Preliminary FoodNet Data on the Incidence of Foodborne Illnesses--Selected Sites, United States, 1999
Article Abstract:
The incidence of many foodborne diseases has decreased since 1996, according to data from the CDC's Emerging Infections Program Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet). Foodnet collects data on nine foodborne diseases, including Campylobacter, E. coli O157, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Yersinia enterocolitica. The incidence of Campylobacter, Salmonella enteritidis, Shigella, and E coli O157 dropped substantially between 1996 and 1999. However, Salmonella typhimurium infections increased. This may have been a result of several outbreaks of Salmonella in 1999 caused by contaminated orange juice, mangos, and raw sprouts.

Outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis associated with cross-contamination of food - Oklahoma, 1996
Article Abstract:
An outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni food poisoning in Oklahoma was traced to a restaurant that did not follow standard food safety practices. This organism is a common cause of food poisoning, affecting about 2 million Americans every year. Of 25 people interviewed who had eaten lunch at the restaurant on a single day in August, 1996, 14 were diagnosed with Campylobacter food poisoning. Symptoms included diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, and stool samples from 10 tested positive for Campylobacter. Inspection of the restaurant indicated that lettuce contaminated by raw poultry was the most likely source.
