Comparison of the cigarette brand preferences of adult and teenaged smokers - United States, 1989, and 10 US communities, 1988 and 1990
Article Abstract:
The most popular brands of cigarettes among adolescent smokers may be Marlboro, Newport and Camel, but adult smokers may prefer a wider variety of cigarette brands. A survey of 1,396 smokers between 12 and 18 years old found that the most popular brand of cigarettes among adolescents was Marlboro. Sixty-nine percent of male adolescents and 68% of female adolescents purchased Marlboro cigarettes. Seventy-one percent of white adolescents and 61% of Hispanic adolescents preferred Marlboro, but black adolescents preferred mentholated brands such as Newport (61%), Kool (11%) and Salem (10%). A survey of 15,415 adult smokers between 25 and 64 years old in 10 communities found that Marlboro, Salem and Winston were popular, but outside of these brands, adult smokers were more varied in their cigarette brand preferences than adolescent smokers. A survey of 424 ninth graders in these 10 communities found that the most popular brands of cigarettes were Marlboro, Camel and Newport. These were also the most heavily advertised brands of cigarettes in 1990.

Tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use among high school students - United States, 1991
Article Abstract:
The US Public Health Service's (PHS) program Healthy People 2000 has set goals for tobacco, alcohol and drug use among US teenagers, but the results of a survey of 12,272 high school students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia show that we have a long way to go. The PHS wants to reduce to 13% the number of students who regularly consume alcohol, but the survey found that 24% to 60% of students regularly consumed alcohol. Twelve percent to 43% of students go on drinking binges, compared to the goal of 28%. Another goal is to reduce to three percent the number of students who regularly smoke marijuana and to less than one percent the number who use cocaine. The survey found that four percent to 18% of the students regularly smoked marijuana and one to four percent regularly used cocaine. Rates of cigarette smoking were similar in men and women, but men were more likely to drink heavily and use drugs.
