Prematurity among insulin-requiring diabetic gravid women
Article Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is characterized by the body's inability to metabolize sugar due to insufficient insulin production. Although the disease can be managed with insulin injections, during pregnancy complications often develop. The incidence of premature births in diabetic pregnancies in a study population was 26.2 percent, compared to 9.7 percent in the general population. Of the premature deliveries, one third were the result of preeclampsia, a life-threatening condition in pregnancy of high blood pressure (hypertension), excessive urine protein and swelling (edema). To reduce the risk of prematurity in this group of patients, the potential causes should be identified. The White system for classifying pregnant diabetics was used on 420 women. Excessive risk of prematurity was confined to hypertensive diabetics and patients of a higher, more severe, White class with normal blood pressure. Other factors influencing prematurity were previous premature delivery, longer diabetic pregnancy episode, and first pregnancies resulting in a male child. An effort should be made to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia and thus ultimately reduce the occurrence of prematurity.

Placental inflammation and viral infection are implicated in second trimester pregnancy loss
Article Abstract:
The association of second trimester loss with histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA), the viral or bacterial pathogens and the maternal demographic characteristics and obstetric history are determined. The results have shown that spontaneous second trimester loss is strongly associated with HCA and viral infections.

The role of thrombin in preterm parturition
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women in premature labor who have increased blood levels of thrombin have a high risk of premature birth, according to a study of 43 pregnant women. Thrombin is an enzyme involved in blood clotting but it can also stimulate the uterus.
