Peril of the stiff upper lip
Article Abstract:
Research by voluntary organisation the Samaritans shows that suicide rates among young men in the UK have risen by 71% since 1985, and by 33% for men aged between 35 and 44. A worrying trend is the high risk among men in the caring professions. One factor could be the so-called 'stiff upper lip' adopted by British males who feel that any expression of emotion is weak and unmanly. The nursing profession can help arrest the rising suicide rate among young men by making their practice more man-friendly and enabling them to admit when they are unable to cope with their fears and problems.

Psychological and emotional impact of an HIV diagnosis
Article Abstract:
A positive HIV antibody test may mean coping with possibly negative reactions from partners, friends and family, and people may feel unable to seek social support. This in turn can make any existing mental health problems worse. There are identified psychiatric disorders in HIV such as acute stress reactions, depression and adjustment disorders, particularly in relatively young people who are least prepared for such illnesses.

Community treatment orders will make mental health nurses' jobs easier
Article Abstract:
Contrasting views are presented about whether the work of mental health nurses in the UK will be assisted by community treatment orders. Some observers believe that community treatment orders are too coercive, while others feel that they could be effective, as long as they are linked with best practice.
