Preparations for skin conditions
Article Abstract:
A number of conditions can affect the skin's outer epidermis and inner dermis. Dry skin, which arises as a result of inadequate moisture content in the stratum corneum, the outer layer of the epidermis, is associated with a range of inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and dermatitis. Emollients, which come in a number of forms, are a key treatment for skin conditions. They are generally very safe to use, but nurses should take care to establish whether a patient is sensitive to any of the constituents in the preparation.

Choosing wound dressings
Article Abstract:
Nurses need to be able to assess the correct dressing to use for a particular type of wound. There are several types of dressings available including knitted viscose primary dressing and perforated-film absorbent dressings. Wounds go through several stages of healing and one wound may need to have many different types of dressing used. A wound needs to be kept clean and infection-free to complete the process of healing. Some dressings retain moisture, others keep the wound dry and others allow air to circulate.

Nurse prescribing - the knowledge base: What knowledge is needed for nurse prescribing?
Article Abstract:
Some nurses can now prescribe from a range of products. Nurses wanting to become prescribers have to meet a range of criteria. These include working in a community unit or GP fundholding practice, the successful completion of a nurse prescribing programme, and having either a district nursing, health visitor or midwife qualification. Nurse prescribers have to be familiar with items in the nurse prescribers formulary and they must have full knowledge and understanding of pharmacology.
