Testing times: Specialist nurses are vital to ensure equal access to gene therapy
Article Abstract:
A policy document, Brave New NHS?, from the Institute of Public Policy Research, aims to encourage debate on challenges to the NHS posed by gene therapy. Specialist nurses are a link between regional genetic centres and the community and could play an important part in future development of services. The report believes moves should be made to attract suitable staff, further training opportunities should be provided and a new career structure could be developed for nurses specializing in genetics.

Upsetting the mix
Article Abstract:
Nursing unions have opposed a National Health Service Value for Money Unit's recommendation to reduce the number of grade G and H District Nurses from 9,000 to 4,600 through skill mixing. They insist task analysis does not reflect the expertise required in community nursing. The measure will demoralise staff and may not be cost effective. The recommendation is also contrary to York University research that has demonstrated the benefits of employing well-qualified staff.
