Presentational skills
Article Abstract:
Making a presentation to groups of people can often be very frightening but it can be made easier by following a series of principles to aid communication skills. Before starting a presentation the speaker should understand the reason for the presentation and have an idea of the sort of people who will be attending. The speaker should ensure they have enough information on the subject they are tackling and that any equipment is fully functional. Good communications rely on a number of points such as the way an idea is transmitted and who sends and receives the information.

Bridging the gap
Article Abstract:
Those working in key roles in the UK health and safety industry are now under great pressure to have a wide range of skills, competencies and knowledge. For this reason, they can be regarded as justified in calling themselves 'professionals.' It is very difficult to assess whether the role of a manager is more or less important than that of a professional, but it is clear that a true professional should have some training and experience in the area of management. It can be argued that it is now time to close the gap between the professional and the manager.

The appliance of science
Article Abstract:
The Institution of Occupational Safety in the UK acknowledges the need to train managers to acquire the necessary skills to make them successful. It is vital managers are good at communicating with others, that they can organize and motivate their staff and they have the ability to plan ahead. Some observers suggest that management can not be taught through the application of theories but that good management is due to personal skill. Others support the need for personal skills but feel that they should be based on theoretical principles.
