Pay and concessions
Article Abstract:
The Irish government has granted nurses a total pay increase of 80 million Irish pounds and promised a commission on nursing, following a strike and the rejection of earlier offers, after the intervention of the Labour Court. The nurses have accepted the terms, whilst not wholly satisfied, attracted by the idea of a commission. A High Court judge, Mella Carroll, will be full-time chairman of the commission, which will also comprise representatives from various trade unions.

The pay revolution
Article Abstract:
The devolved Welsh and Scottish parliaments would be able to interpret the UK nurses' pay review recommendations in a different way than elsewhere in the UK, if they so wished. This is not likely to happen in the short term, however. According to the head of health of the trade union Unison in Scotland, Jim Devine, it would be better if salaries and conditions for nurses for the whole UK were uniform, but in the long term it is probable that this will change.

One eye on tomorrow
Article Abstract:
Nurses who retire will have the state pension, a nurse's pension and any provision of their own. The government is offering the new stakeholder pension, a low cost plan with tax incentives, and also changing SERPS (state earnings related pension) so that lower earners can benefit, under the new name of the state second pension.
