Prevalence, incidence, and risks for HIV-1 infection in female sex workers in Miami, Florida
Article Abstract:
The percentage of HIV infected women among female prostitutes in Miami, Florida may be relatively stable, but the rate at which these women become infected may be increasing. Researchers analyzed the mandatory HIV tests of 607 women convicted of prostitution in Miami between 1987 and 1990. During this time period, the percentage of HIV positive women went from 22% to 24%. Among 220 women who had more than one HIV test, 17% went from testing negative to testing positive. Between 1987 and 1990, the rate at which women went from testing negative to testing positive increased from 12 seroconversions/100 person-years to 19 seroconversions/100 person-years. The risk of becoming HIV positive was three times higher among African-American and Hispanic women than among White women. The risk of becoming HIV positive was also higher among women who developed syphilis or gonorrhea between tests.

HIV prevalence and sexual behavior in a cohort of New York City gay men (aged 18-24)
Article Abstract:
AIDS prevention programs need to be taken into ethnic neighborhoods where many young gay men appear to be ignorant of their risk of contracting HIV infection. Researchers interviewed 174 gay men aged 18 to 24 living in New York City about their sexual practices. They also tested 87 of the men for HIV. Eight of these men tested positive for HIV. Four were black, three were Latino and only one was white. Half of the total group had never been tested for HIV. When 149 of the men were interviewed again one year later, they reported that they had sex more often, with more partners, and they almost never protected themselves when having oral sex. One of 57 men who were tested again had become HIV-positive.

Tuberculosis and HIV infection among female inmates in Sao Paulo, Brazil: a prospective cohort study
Article Abstract:
Prison administrators need to implement programs to quickly diagnose and treat tuberculosis in prisoners. Researchers studied 350 women imprisoned in Sao Paulo, Brazil between Oct 1992 and Nov 1993. Eighty-seven (25%) tested positive for HIV and 60.8% had a positive tuberculin test. Thirty-one percent of those who tested negative for tuberculosis tested positive on a subsequent test. This indicates that tuberculosis was being transmitted inside the prison. HIV-negative women were just as likely to acquire tuberculosis as HIV-positive women.
