Prevalence of Lysosomal Storage Disorders
Article Abstract:
Lysosomal storage disorders as a group may affect many people even though the incidence of specific disorders is rare. There are 41 different lysosomal storage disorders, all of which are metabolic disorders. Researchers analyzed the incidence of lysosomal storage disorders in Australia between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1996. During this time period, 545 people were diagnosed with one of 27 different lysosomal storage disorders, which translates to 1 case per every 7,700 live births. Individually, however, some disorders were more rare than others.

Swapping health care systems: whose grass is really greener?
Article Abstract:
Australia has a health care system that guarantees health care to all but it is not without problems. Universal coverage is financed by the government through taxes. The government developed fee schedules that guarantee payments to physicians. However, state governments run most public hospitals and there is an inefficient duplication in bureaucracies. Despite government incentives, many physicians are unwilling to practice in rural areas. Downsizing in many public hospitals has led to a drop in quality.

Drug Doings Down Under
Article Abstract:
The federal government of Australia has announced a "war on drugs." A total of Aust $220 million (US $139 million) will be spent on 300,000 new treatment places, some of them compulsory; fast-tracked approval of naltrexone and buprenorphine for government subsidy; and assistance to schools and state and federal polices. Although Prime Minister John Howard is skeptical about needle exchange programs, these programs have given Australia one of the lowest HIV infection rates in drug users in the world.
