Effect of False-Positive Mammograms on Interval Breast Cancer Screening in a Health Maintenance Organization
Article Abstract:
Women who have had a false-positive mammogram did not become alienated from regular screening, but in fact were more likely to return for the next scheduled screening than others. Of 5,059 women over 40 years of age with no history of breast cancer or breast surgery, 813 had false-positive results. Following up intermittently for up to 42 months, and after adjusting for differences in age, previous mammograms, family histories, and such, the women who had false-positives were more likely to return for the next screening by a ratio of 1.21 to 1.00. Those for whom this was the first mammogram returned at a rate of 1.66 to 1.00

The cost-effectiveness of mammography in women older than 65 years of age
Article Abstract:
Mammography every two years may be cost-effective for women older than 65 years old, according to researchers who analyzed 10 studies on this topic. Screening every woman over the age of 65 every two years would cost between $34,000 and $88,000 for every year of life saved. It is probably more cost-effective to screen healthy women than those who have an illness that might shorten their life.
