Prevalence of Gardnerella vaginalis in Prepubertal Males
Article Abstract:
Gardnerella vaginalis does not appear to occur naturally in the genital tract and rectum of prepubertal boys. This bacterium is normally transmitted sexually. Researchers analyzed cultures taken from the urethra, glans penis and rectum of 99 prepubertal boys, some of whom had been circumcised. None of the cultures tested positive for the organism. Consequently, boys who test positive for Gardnerella vaginalis may be victims of child sexual abuse.
