Preventing Surgical Infection Is More Important Than Ever
Article Abstract:
All medical personnel who work in an operating room should be vaccinated against hepatitis B. Surgeons and other OR personnel are at risk of contracting a blood-borne infection. Although the risk may be small, they need to take precautions to protect themselves. Hepatitis C is a threat because it is becoming more common in the US population and there is no vaccine. Surgeons also need to protect their patients from developing a surgical site infection (SSI). Over 15,000 surgical patients developed an SSI between 1986 and 1996. An additional danger is that more bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics.
