Interval debulking of ovarian cancer - an interim measure
Article Abstract:
Interval debulking of ovarian tumors may prolong a woman's life but it should not be viewed as a curative procedure. Interval debulking is the term for an operation to remove part of the tumor to reduce its size after the woman has received several cycles of chemotherapy. A 1995 study found that interval debulking can prolong the lives of women with ovarian cancer. However, the women who had the surgery survived only slightly longer than women who did not have the surgery. More research is needed on effective screening techniques, since most women are diagnosed when the disease is in an advanced stage. Drugs that can shrink the tumor without the need for debulking would eliminate the need for an invasive procedure. Genetic research may identify women at risk of hereditary ovarian cancer.

Aluminum neurotoxicity in preterm infants receiving intravenous-feeding solutions
Article Abstract:
It may be best to give premature infants feeding solutions that are free of aluminum. Some intravenous feeding solutions contain aluminum but premature infants may not be able to excrete it properly. Researchers tested mental development in 182 premature infants who were randomly assigned to receive normal feeding solutions or solutions that had been depleted of aluminum. Those infants who received prolonged feeding with normal solutions had lower scores on a test of mental development compared to those who received aluminum-depleted solutions.
