Switching the management of epilepsy to primary care
Article Abstract:
There are no national guidelines on how to refer or diagnose epilepsy despite it being the most common neurological illness. Caring for epileptics in a more co-ordinated way would help to reduce the total cost of care which is currently 1.9 billion pounds sterling. Correct diagnosis is essential so that only those who need treatment are referred for care. This would reduce costs and the relieve pressure on the service. Audits and targets would also improve the epilepsy service. Nurses can be involved in the running of primary care clinics and also manage the audits.
