Stem cells hold vision for the future
Article Abstract:
Transplantation of stem cells from a donor cornea may improve the outcome of subsequent corneal transplant in patients with injured eyes. When an eye is damaged and vision lost, the tissue around the clear portion may no longer support the growth of corneal tissue, so transplants fail. Implanting growth-promoting stem cells from a donor eye produced stable tissue in 72% of 21 patients studied, and 60% had improved vision. The addition of amniotic membrane, or the culturing of corneal tissue in a laboratory may further improve outcomes in these patients who previously had few options.

HIV guide for primary care physicians stresses patient-centered prevention
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association has developed a booklet to help primary care physicians help patients avoid HIV infection. Most of the booklet discusses sexual intercourse and intravenous drug abuse, which are the two leading risk factors for HIV infection in the US. It includes a form that can be photocopied and used to question each patient about risky behavior. It also illustrates how to use a condom. A more controversial section details the proper way to clean syringes and needles.
