Progress toward global eradication of dracunculiasis, January-June 2003
Article Abstract:
A total of 15,688 people in 12 African countries developed Guinea worm disease between January and June, 2003. This is considerably less than the 23,116 cases reported during the same period in 2002, reflecting successful efforts to prevent this parasitic infection. Eighty-nine percent of the infections occurred in the Sudan and Ghana. The civil war in Sudan is hampering efforts to reduce the impact of this disease.

Do Patents for Antiretroviral Drugs Constrain Access to AIDS Treatment in Africa?
Article Abstract:
Drug patenting does not appear to be responsible for the lack of AIDS drugs in Africa. Most AIDS drugs are not patented in Africa, even though most of the 53 African countries have patent laws. The high cost of AIDS drugs and the poverty of most Africans are more likely to prevent access to the drugs.
