Promises, promises
Article Abstract:
The three major political parties were asked for their plans for the NHS if they win the election. Their plans for recruitment and funding, public health, care of the elderly, mental health and training were presented. Both the Liberal Democrats and Labour would seek to ban tobacco advertising, although the Conservatives have no plans to implement legal restrictions on advertising. They were also asked for their plans for NHS structure, with the Liberal Democrats seeking to create a common funding basis for all GPs and Labour seeking to scrap the internal market, although the Conservatives would encourage the growth of GP fundholding. Other subjects covered included waiting lists and gagging clauses.

New Labour new NHS: will the new Labour government cure the NHS or simply provide a line for a lingering drip feed?
Article Abstract:
The NHS is now under Labour management but there is unlikely to be any sweeping revolution within the NHS, but changes will be driven by need based on appropriate local consultations. The Labour party wants to divert the 1.5 billion pounds sterling a year it costs to run the internal market, into direct patient care, a move that will be welcomed by clinicians. It is committed to spending more money on the NHS but it is uncertain where the money will come from, and the government plans to concentrate on education rather than health as a priority.
