Promoting continence control
Article Abstract:
Attitudes to the management of incontinence in the elderly have changed in both the UK and North America during the past 20 years. Three top North American nurse researchers, specializing in the promotion of continence in the elderly will be speaking at the forthcoming Second International Conference of the Association for Continence Advice (ACA). Associate professor Mary Palmer, has observed positive developments in continence management. However nurse specialist Joyce Colling believes that attempts to assess, treat and manage urinary incontinence in the residents of nursing homes have only been partially successful.

Continence: intermittent self-catheterisation
Article Abstract:
Intermittent self-catheterisation is not only a safer alternative than surgery or indwelling catheters for patients with voiding problems but improves such patients' quality of life. Intermittent self-catheterisation reduces the risk of urinary tract infections often associated with indwelling catheters and prevents chronic urinary retention. An assessment of four commonly used intermittent catheters published by the Medical Devices Agency in Jun. 1996, found little difference in performance between the cheaper and more expensive products. The choice of catheter is basically a matter of patient preference.

Padded sell: patients are still suffering the consequences of last year's ruling about VAT on continence pads
Article Abstract:
The ruling by Customs and Excises on continence pads has meant that a further 15% funding is required to maintain levels of service, and a recent VAT tribunal appeal has not resolve the problems. Some health services have had to introduce waiting lists for continence products as a result, and patients have been affected by cutbacks throughout the country. Specialist nurses are having to implement policy decisions and then explain such actions to their patients.
