Protecting the lungs: the hierarchy of controls
Article Abstract:
The protection of workers from airborne contaminants, which are not biological agents or carcinogenic, should be maintained in alternative ways to relying on respiratory protective equipment (RPE). The use of RPE can be restrictive and uncomfortable, it also relies on the wearer using it correctly. But in many situations it is the only safe way of working in hazardous locations. Other methods of reducing the risk of contamination are by the substitution of potentially dangerous materials, by changing methods of usage and using safer working techniques to reduce exposure.
