Self-medication and STD prevention
Article Abstract:
Research may be needed to investigate the practice of self-medication with antibiotics to prevent acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Antibiotics may be obtained in many parts of the world without going through a doctor. Research in the Philippines suggests that self-medication with antibiotics to prevent STDs is a widespread practice among prostitutes and their customers. Filipino men who frequent prostitutes use rifampicin, an anti-tuberculosis drug, to prevent acquiring STDs. Analysis of health myths in the popular culture regarding self-medication should be conducted to improve STD research.

New approaches to syphilis control: finding opportunities for syphilis treatment and congenital syphilis prevention in a women's correctional setting
Article Abstract:
A rapid syphilis test combined with a registry of patients diagnosed with syphilis can ensure that more patients are effectively treated. Researchers used this technique to test 685 women admitted to a correctional facility in New York City. If a woman tested positive, she was treated during her incarceration. This resulted in the identification of 115 new syphilis cases not in the registry and 45 cases in the registry who had never been treated. Syphilis treatment rates increased from 7% to 84%.
