Prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in Italy: the Chiavari study
Article Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis appears to be very uncommon in Italy. Researchers surveyed 3,294 people in the town of Chiavari and found that 7% reported swelling in at least two parallel joints. Only 11 patients had rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune form of painful joint swelling and degradation. The rate of rheumatoid arthritis was 0.13% in men and 0.55% in women, and the overall population rate was only 0.33%. Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with genes that are uncommon in Mediterranean populations, and particular environmental conditions may reduce the incidence in Italy.

Does social disadvantage contribute to the excess mortality in rheumatoid arthritis patients?
Article Abstract:
The authors have determined that poorer people in socioeconomically deprived areas who have rheumatoid arthritis have a higher mortality rate than those who are wealthier. This was confirmed in a 12 year follow up study, noting that the majority of deaths were from heart or respiratory failure or cancer.
