Psychological first aid
Article Abstract:
Some health trusts are establishing debriefing procedures for employees who are involved in traumatic incidents to prevent psychological damage and subsequent claims for compensation. Some say professionals within the emergency services should not be permitted to claim compensation for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being involved in traumatic incidents as they should be prepared for such events when they apply to join the service. Some also feel if one PTSD compensation case is successful in court, professionals from all aspects of medical care will pursue similar claims.

Special needs cry out for special care
Article Abstract:
People with learning disabilities need extra care but this is being compromised by a lack of resources, according to a major inquiry. Fewer nurses are specialising in care of the mentally handicapped, leading to a lack of expertise in this field. Although in 1993-94 the National Health Service spent over one billion pounds on those with learning disabilities, many live in poverty and are excluded from society. Many also suffer from health problems which places extra pressure on health budgets. The report calls for more money given at a local level to improve standards of care.
