Article Abstract:
Nurse students are establishing electives to widen their experience of related fields. Leeds College of health, England Project 2000 course includes a one-week self-directed programme. A placement with the Stepney Nursing Development Unit, London, England provided primary health care experience in an ethnically varied inner city community. The elective provided a valuable opportunity for exchange of ideas in a multi-disciplinary situation.

Lonely hearts club
Article Abstract:
Many nurses fail to recognise loneliness as a health issue. However, loneliness may be caused by health problems or contribute to them. Doctors have traditionally treated the symptoms medically although a psychological approach may be more appropriate. Contact with self-help organisations can be beneficial. Age concern has greatly contributed to the well-being of the elderly.

Dreams for the new year
Article Abstract:
New year wishes for 1993 include the integration of health and social services. The needs of carers and elderly peple should also be recognised. Attention should be paid to quality as well as distribution of services. Health promotion should be fundmental to health care. Nurses should be more assertive and suppport their colleagues.
