Community hospitals' response to the geriatric imperative
Article Abstract:
Allegheny County, PA, is a model for geriatric care. Demographically, the county is about two decades ahead of the rest of the US: 17% of its residents are over the age of 65. Geriatric programs at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh are especially worthy of note. These include driving skill improvement, insurance counseling, town hall meetings and durable power of attorney seminars. Almost all Pittsburgh-area hospitals operate their own nursing homes.

States call for subsidized insurance for working poor
Article Abstract:
Several states are considering assistance to workers who have no health insurance but do not qualify for Medicare. Florida, for instance, where the majority of 2.5 million uninsured residents are workers and their families, passed a law requiring employers to provide access to basic care by 1995. Minnesota's legislature is expected to pass a bill that would provide health insurance at premiums on a sliding scale according to income.
