New study shows higher risk of heart valve fractures
Article Abstract:
Results of a Dutch study prompted the Food and Drug Administration to ask heart valve maker Shiley Inc to notify patients that the failure rate for the Bjork-Shiley heart valve is higher than previously believed. The study found that the risk of failure of Shiley's 60-degree heart valve may be as high as 0.8% per year for people 49 and younger, if their valves substitute for the mitral valve. Approximately 23,000 people in the United States and Canada have 60-degree Shiley valves.

National panel urges more steps against scientific misconduct
Article Abstract:
A national advisory panel appointed by the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Science and the Institute of Medicine recommended development of safeguards against scientific misconduct. Peer review and correction through repetition are not sufficient. Agencies must develop criteria for dealing with misconduct. However, the panel recommended leaving the specific guidelines to each agency, rather than calling for a national policy.

Too expensive or justified? War waging over drug prices
Article Abstract:
Drug prices continue to rise, but the pharmaceutical industry claims the pace of price increases has slowed. The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Assn's advertising campaign compares drug treatment costs and benefits with surgeons' fees. However, Sen David Pryor and other members of Congress call for a law to control drug prices. Also, Families USA Foundation reports prices of widely used drugs have risen four times faster than inflation.
