Purchasing power
Article Abstract:
The establishment of UK primary care groups is allowing nurses to be represented on a equal footing with doctors in November 1998. The primary care group boards will have influence over service and supplies purchasing agreements. Doctors are expected to be given overall control on primary care group boards, although nurses will seek a greater role within the groups when their roles have been more defined. Nurses will be able to raise issues with primary care groups through their representative nurse.

New dawn for nurse power
Article Abstract:
UK nurses will have a greater role in delivering health care to the community with the introduction of primary care groups (PCGs) from 1 April 1999. PCGs will be responsible for commissioning services for their own area, allowing nurses a greater input when budgets are allocated. Concerns have been raised by nursing unions regarding pay structures and the small number of nurses involved in PCG compared to doctors who are expected to benefit the most.
