Internal struggle: internists debate whether they are really generalists or specialists
Article Abstract:
The need for more primary care physicians has pressured internists to align themselves either with other primary care doctors or as a separate specialty. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has developed new standards for internal medicine training programs. For example, internist students must have at least ten hours per week of direct faculty supervision and should have a written curriculum. Additional discussion about the internists' efforts to define themselves is also included.

New approaches to residency include managed care
Article Abstract:
The trend to managed care may revolutionize medical residents' education to strengthen primary care rather than specialization. Several medical schools and groups including the AMA are studying curriculum improvements to help train physicians for practice in health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and other managed-care plans. Some HMOs, such as Kaiser, offer optional classes to help doctors adapt to the needs of the system, including stress on ambulatory and preventive treatment.
