Quality Measures and Electronic Medical Systems
Article Abstract:
It may be difficult to create electronic medical systems that collect data about the quality of health care using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9). The ICD-9 contains numeric codes for most diseases and treatments and these codes are entered into computer databases. A computer could search for specific codes to see if patients received the most appropriate care for that particular disease. This is one way to measure the quality of health care and computers could be programmed to do much of the work. However, the ICD-9, which was created for hospitals, needs to be modified for use by doctors in private practice.
