Sexuality and the stoma: helping patients to cope
Article Abstract:
Nurses working with stoma patients need to be aware of possible problems and difficulties concerning sexuality post-operatively. Stoma patients may feel a loss of self-esteem, feeling uncomfortable with their changed body and the presence of the stoma bag. Issues of sexuality should be discussed with the patient before the operation, preferably with a nurse who has made a good relationship with the patient and their partner. If nurses feel unable to cope with such demands, others should be available to discuss any worries or queries the stoma patient may have relating to sexuality.

Support role
Article Abstract:
Nurses must help stoma patients come to terms with the changes in their life following a urinary or bowel stoma. The patient will experience changes in their body image. Body image concerns a person's ideal about their body, the reality, and the balance between the two concepts. Nurses can support the patient emotionally and practically as they adjust to changes in body image. Nurses can also counsel the patient as they go through the stages of bereavement associated with the loss aspects of stoma interventions, and they can talk with the patient on issues connected with sexuality.

Waste disposal for the ostomate in the community
Article Abstract:
Nurses working with stoma patients should provide guidance about the safe and discreet disposal of soiled equipment. Some pouch producers now offer biodegradable units that can be flushed down the toilet, but these can currently only be used by those with colostomies.
