The difficulty of detecting HTLV-I proviral sequences in patients with mycosis fungoides
Article Abstract:
Tissue samples from patients with mycosis fungoides that are to be tested for the human T cell lymphotropic viruses (HTLV) need to be processed in a particular way. Mycosis fungoides is a lymphoma of the skin. Researchers found that whole cell extracts need to be tested rather than DNA extracts. Also, the samples should be fresh and not cultured. When they used these methods, samples from 10 patients with mycosis fungoides all tested positive for the HTLV tax sequence. Only one sample tested positive when DNA extracts were used. This could account for the difficulty some groups have had in detecting the virus in these patients.

HIV-1 proviral DNA load across neuroanatomic regions of individuals with evidence for HIV-1 associated dementia
Article Abstract:
The authors address the fact that there has been no relationship shown between HIV-1 load and HIV-1-associated dementia of HIV-1 encephalitis. Their attempts indicate more research will need to be done.
