Questions for surveys
Article Abstract:
Information in surveys should be viewed critically as some are inadequate, based on poor responses and have incorrect conclusions. Some surveys do not have sufficient information and require additional work to justify their findings. A nurse should at first decide if a survey is at all relevant for their own use or will assist them in further study. The people involved in the study, how the sample was obtained and the rate of response from participants are important factors to help determine the validity of the research. The authors of surveys should also explain their methodology.

Randomised controlled trials: Questions for valid evidence
Article Abstract:
An efficiently carried out randomised controlled trial (RCT) is an appropriate method by which practitioners can assess the effectiveness of medical intervention, although the results of an RCT should not be the sole basis of the judgement. The limited size of an RCT often fails to detect major differences between intervention methods, therefore large scale trials are more appropriate. Practitioners need to take into account several key elements which could have differing effects on an RCT before reaching a clinical decision.

Management of leg ulcers
Article Abstract:
Algorithms can play an important role as aids to teaching and the basis for guidelines for the management of leg ulcers. However, they should not be used as a replacement for clear clinical assessment. It is vital to full ascertain the patient's general health, and to also take into account issues such as ulcer duration, diabetes, allergies and interventions. An ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) can be a useful part of the assessment process, and can indicate whether it is appropriate to apply a pressure bandage.
