Blood coagulation: what screening tests can show
Article Abstract:
Patients who bleed or bruise easily are given various test to screen for different disorders. The tests include a platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and thrombin time (TT). A low platelet count may indicate bone marrow disease, purpura, leukaemia or a viral infection. APTT, TT, and PT tests reveal faults in the clotting mechanism, such as in haemophilia, liver disease or a vitamin K deficiency. Details of the clotting process and conditions which cause bleeding are given.

Leucocytes and the value of the differential count test
Article Abstract:
White blood cells, known as leucocytes, are a vital element in the process of inflammation, acting together to contain and control infection. There are five types of leucocyte - neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes and basophils - and a full blood count includes a differential count, or a measure of the number of each different type. A differential white cell count reveals serious problems in white cell development.
