Quinidine
Article Abstract:
Quinidine is a commonly prescribed drug for heart rhythm abnormalities, often used to prevent rapid beating of the heart atria after electrical defibrillation. Quinidine blocks sodium and potassium ion channels in the heart muscle, thereby reducing electrical activity. The drug can be used for atrial arrhythmias and, to a limited extent, for ventricular arrhythmias. A significant complication of quinidine therapy is that the drug may induce a type of ventricle rhythm defect called torsade de pointes. In high-risk patients, close observation may be required when the drug is first used.

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD): Expanding indications and technologies
Article Abstract:
The evolving indications for and the numerous advances in implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) technology are highlighted, with emphasis on primary and secondary prophylaxis of sudden cardiac death (SCD). ICDs are shown to improve survival as both primary and secondary prophylaxis in an expanding population of patients and ongoing ICD research may continue to delineate groups with survival benefit from the ICDs.

Effect of fish oil on ventricular tachyarrhythmia and death in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the effect of supplemental fish oil versus placebo on ventricular tachyarrhythmia or death. The results obtained do not indicate evidence of a strong protective effect of intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from fish oil against ventricular tachyarrhythmia in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators.
