Racial disparities in access to renal transplantation: clinically appropriate or due to underuse or overuse?
Article Abstract:
African-Americans with kidney failure are less likely to receive a kidney transplant when they need one and whites with kidney failure are more likely to receive a transplant even though they don't need one. Thus the racial disparity in kidney transplants is partly due to an underuse in blacks and an overuse in whites.

Racial disparities in medical care
Article Abstract:
A study which found that black heart attack patients are less likely to receive some medical services even when their doctor was black shows that personal racial bias may not be involved. Instead, the design of the entire health care system could be responsible for the fact that blacks are less likely to receive medical services than whites.

The effect of patients' preferences on racial differences in access to renal transplantation
Article Abstract:
Many black patients with end-stage kidney disease are not offered a kidney transplant or placed on a waiting list for one even though they may want one. In a study of 1,392 patients with end-stage kidney disease, black patients were slightly less likely to want a transplant than white patients. However, this did not completely explain the large discrepancy in the rates of referral for a transplant. Only half the blacks were referred even though 75% to 80% had expressed a preference for a transplant. Only one-third of the blacks were placed on a waiting list compared to 55% to 60% of the whites.
