Ranibizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration
Article Abstract:
Ranibizumab-a recombinant, humanized, monoclonal antibody Fab that neutralizes all active forms of vascular endothelial growth factor A, was evaluated for the treatment of neovascular age-related mascular degeneration. Results reveal that intravitreal administration of ranibizumab for 2 years prevented vision loss and improved mean visual acuity, with low rates of serious adverse events, in patients with minimally classic or occult (with no classic lesions) choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related mascular degeneration.

Ranibizumab versus verteporfin for neovascular age-related macular degeneration
Article Abstract:
A comparison of ranibizumab-a recombinant, humanized monoclonal antibody Fab that neutralizes all active forms of vascular endothelial growth factor A with photodynamic therapy with verteporfin in the treatment of predominantly classic neovascular age-related macular degeneration is presented. Ranibizumab was found superior to verteporfin as intravitreal treatment of predominantly classic neovascular age-related macular degeneration, with low rates of serious ocular adverse events.

Age-related macular degeneration
Article Abstract:
The clinical features of age-related macular degeneration, the physiology of the aging macula and the mechanisms implicated in the cause are discussed. Smoking, exposure to light, and inflammation, all associated with local activation of macrophages, are some of the main risk factors for macular degeneration.
