The childhood homicide rate was 5 times higher in the US than in all other countries combined. Eighty-six percent of all firearm-related childhood deaths occurred in the US. Regional variations in suicide rates - United States, 1990-1994
Article Abstract:
Suicide rates vary throughout the US and the reasons for this are not clear. An analysis of nationwide mortality rates found that 154,444 people committed suicide in the US between 1990 and 1994. Suicide rates were highest in the West, followed by the South, Midwest and Northeast. Ten of the thirteen western states ranked in the top quartile, the most of any region. Rates in the West were 70% higher than in the Northeast. Firearms were the leading cause of death and the rate of firearm suicides was highest in the South.
