Recent developments in restorative dental ceramics
Article Abstract:
New types of dental ceramics have been developed since the 1970s to use in dental restorations. A dental restoration is an appliance used to replace a lost tooth structure, teeth or oral tissue. An inlay, crown, bridge and partial or complete denture are different examples of dental restorations. Different types of dental restorations include all ceramic or metal-ceramic restorations made from feldspathic porcelains. A gold alloy formulation and a feldspathic porcelain were patented in 1962. These materials are largely responsible for the success of metal-ceramic restorations. Metal alloys with a lower gold content were introduced in the 1970s and 1980s. The introduction of the aluminous porcelain jacket crown in 1965 was the first innovation in ceramic restorations since 1903. Glass-ceramics are another alternative to conventional porcelains for use in all-ceramic restorations.

Medicare: trends in reimbursing hospital dental practices
Article Abstract:
Americans are clamoring for health care reform as the realization grows that the US ranks lower than many other countries in the delivery of basic health care that would prevent many illnesses and deaths. An estimated 15% of the American population have no insurance to provide them with basic health care, and the number who have no dental insurance is almost three times as great. A national sampling of dentists who work in hospitals revealed that dental procedures covered by Medicare are not equally reimbursed. The problem lies with the lack of uniform guidelines and universal claim forms as well as inappropriate interpretation. Most of the 179 respondents whose questionnaires were analyzed favored medically adjunctive dental care as part of national health care reform. Only legislative action can solve the inequities of the Medicare system.
