Recent developments in the understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of anaerobic infections
Article Abstract:
Nonspecific vaginitis has been indentified as a syndrome caused by anaerobic bacteria. Anitbiotic treatment has resulted in the elimination of these organisms and the resolution of symptoms. It has not been determined whether mobiluncus will replace gardeneralla as the recognized cause of this condition. Although the recognition of anaerobic contributions to deep infections of the female genital tract is not new, the importance of the anaerobic component is increasingly acknowledged. Bacteroides bivius and B.disiens have been implicated as cuases of other obstetrical infections. Several new methods are available for diagnosing anaerobic pathogens.

Antibiotics and Clostridium difficile
Article Abstract:
Hospital pharmacies may have to restrict the use of certain antibiotics to prevent outbreaks of diarrhea caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile. This bacterium is common in hospitals and long-term care facilities and is a common cause of diarrhea. A 1999 study linked the use of the antibiotic clindamycin to outbreaks of diarrhea at several hospitals. Research shows that second- and third-generation cephalosporins, clindamycin, ampicillin, and amoxicillin are associated most closely with C. difficile diarrhea. At several hospitals, when use of these antibiotics was restricted, the incidence of C. difficile diarrhea decreased substantially.

Antimicrobial use in animal feed -- time to stop
Article Abstract:
Farmers and ranchers should stop giving antibiotics to food animals just to promote growth, especially antibiotics that are also used to treat human infections. Many bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, and the use of antibiotics in food animals is one reason why this is happening.
