Recommendations for off-label use of intravenously administered immunoglobulin preparations
Article Abstract:
A University Hospital Consortium (UHC) panel has made recommendations for 53 purposes for intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) that were not included in the product labeling by the FDA. The panel consisted of eight board-certified physicians in a variety of specialties and two pharmacists. Among the suggestions formulated along with the expanded usage were that IVIG should be used only after standard approaches have been unsuccessful and IVIG is not guaranteed free of viral contamination. It was suggested that IVIG therapy may be used for applications in neurology, hematology and rheumatology. The FDA currently licenses IVIG products for use in patients with immunodeficiencies. These uses have included bacterial infections, bone marrow transplantation, and HIV infections.

The new Arab Cold War
Article Abstract:
The Arab Cold War, which ended after the Six Day War in 1967, has been revived by security concerns in the region following the Persian Gulf crisis and the breakup of the Soviet Union. The growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East, and efforts by Arab states to draw US favour and assert their influence has nourished the new Arab Cold War. The environmental disasters and economic instability in the region have further worsened the Cold War situation. Iraq's relations with other Arab states, such as Jordan and Syria, and Egypt's relations with Sudan are discussed.
