Dilation of benign ureteral strictures
Article Abstract:
Percutaneous nephrostomy has become a safe and fast way of accessing the upper urinary system, primarily the kidney. This approach has been augmented by the use of balloon angioplasty techniques of various ureteral strictures, or constrictions in the urinary tract. There was a strong relationship between duration of postsurgical stricture and the results of dilation in 33 patients in whom the stricture was less than three months old, an 88 percent success rate was achieved. There is an overall success rate of 76 percent for the balloon angioplasty study. An accurate prediction of the outcome of ureteral stricture dilation can be made by taking into account the chronicity, location, and cause of the stricture. In postsurgical strictures of balloon angioplasty the results depend on the amount and degree of scarring that has caused the stricture. Naturally occurring strictures and strictures of longer duration are less likely to be dilated successfully than postsurgical strictures of sudden onset and shorter duration.

Stercoral perforation of the colon: a complication of methadone maintenance
Article Abstract:
A case report of a 43-year-old male patient who developed a stercoral perforation of the colon during a methadone maintenance therapy is presented. He had a medical history of intense lower abdominal pain for 24 hours prior to admission and was suffering from constipation for five consecutive days. Results of the physical examination revealed generalized abdominal guarding, hard stool in the rectal vault and rebound tenderness. Management of the condition was through an exploratory laparotomy, copious peritoneal lavage, end colostomy and Hartman's Pouch procedure.
