Hepatic imaging in HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count)(Transactions of the Sixty-Third Annual Meeting of the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists)
Article Abstract:
Abnormal results of liver enzyme tests in pregnant women with HELLP syndrome may not correspond with abnormal computed tomographic (CT) scans of the liver. HELLP syndrome is a serious complication of pregnancy involving destruction of red blood cells, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet levels. Researchers compared laboratory results of 34 HELLP patients with severe upper right abdominal pain to CT scans of the liver. Sixteen patients (47%) had abnormal CT scans. Abnormal CT scans correlated with very low platelet counts in 10 of 13 patients (77%). Liver hemorrhage can be managed without surgery.

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy in 3 tertiary care centers
Article Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to determine the demographics, clinical presentation, and maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients who were diagnosed with acute fatty liver of pregnancy over a 10-year period. It is recommended that patients with persistent nausea, vomiting, or epigastric pain in the third trimester receive evaluation of liver enzymes, renal function, and a complete blood count to rule out the diagnosis of acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
