Referral rates vary greatly by physician specialty
Article Abstract:
An American Medical Association (AMA) survey indicates that general medical practitioners refer their patients to other doctors more often than physicians in specialized medical fields. Obstetrics/gynecology physicians had the lowest referral rate, 4.0%, followed by surgical specialists, who referred patients in 4.7% of cases. The highest referral rates were in general/family practice and emergency medicine, with referral rates of 11.2% and 57%, respectively. Overall, physicians referred their patients in about 9% of cases.

Early pension distributions may be taxing problem
Article Abstract:
New income tax rules that take effect in Jan 1993 include a required 20% tax deduction from pre-retirement distributions unless directly rolled over into a previously established individual retirement account or other qualified pension. The new rules cancel the 60-day period during which rollover funds can be retained. However, a refund of the 20% withholding tax can be claimed if the rollover was accomplished in 60 days. The Internal Revenue Service plans to issue clarifications of the new rules.

Life insurance policies offer array of commission options
Article Abstract:
The cash value of many whole life or universal life insurance policies can be much less than one would expect, primarily because a large part of the premium for the first several years goes to pay the agent's commission and other fees. There are alternatives to full-commission policies, however, including policies with no commission or a reduced commission and commission rebates. Consumers need to evaluate their needs before making a purchasing decision.
