Reflections of a maverick measurement maven
Article Abstract:
A professor who has been involved in the field of physician testing and evaluation for 35 years describes both the encouraging progress made in testing methods and the lack of fundamental change regarding competency. After delivering a speech on medical credentialing to the American Board of Medical Specialties in 1994, the professor received a transcript of a speech given to the group 50 years earlier that stated the same central problem and called for boards and faculty to design examinations based on defined competency, which would yield more valid results. Current medical testing is, however, moving away from essay and multiple-choice tests to performance-based and simulation testing. This change gives testers the opportunity to show their understanding of medical procedures by actual demonstration.

Service Excellence in Health Care
Article Abstract:
Doctors should integrate the principles of customer service into their practices. Quality of service is just as important as quality of care. Quality of service may be one component of patient satisfaction. Patients definitely take the quality of service into consideration when decided whether they have received good quality medical care. Many doctors and nurses have never been trained to deliver good quality customer service. However, many books and articles have been written about providing good quality customer service. Most people seeking medical care can be considered patients and customers.
